Let me speculate on some somewhat plausible paths to ‘this better world’.
I will try not to digress too much.
I explore a network of possibilities—a garden of forking paths.
Consumer Grade First
I would start out with some fairly well known platform designed for the masses.
I have spent time thinking about these three iOS from Apple, Mac OS X from Apple or Android from Google.
I suppose that Windows would also work but I am less familiar with Windows.
I would try to arrange with the principle developers of that platform to cooperate.
The idea presented is to replace a layer or two of their software technology, and conceivably their hardware, with an experimental version.
All this while preserving much or all of the legacy applications and frameworks.
We preserve the legacy hardware as well.
The proposal does not assume that the entire platform would switch at some point but intellectual property rights would be established to make that possible.
One principle to establish is that the resulting system would be available at some not unreasonable price to the end user.
The stake holders in this scenario would be hopefully include the platform’s principle developers.
Such a scenario is about what I had in mind in this note.
Industrial Grade First
Perhaps we must divide this area into:
- IoT such industrial cameras whose recent fame is contribution to bot-nets
- Critical infrastructure computers in control of important infrastructure: utilities, internet, etc.
I imagine many control computers with simple tasks controlling important infrastructure and running Linux or similar systems, connected to internet because that is the default was computers communicate today.
I may be wrong but I think this area may be simpler as it need not deal with the technologies of display hardware, DSPs, etc.
I will presume a consensus
