It would seem from W3C notes that XHTML is the natural continuation of the series of HTML specifications. XHTML requires the pickier XML rules and I resist this for my own pages for its verboseness. HTML is klunky enough already. I believe that modern browsers dynamically graduate each html document into the newer internal form invented for the XML world. We are concerned here with processing legacy html documents.
