I am absolutely not turned on by any of the ‘social network’ sites. I think I can see why they attract some. I am not sure what it is about me that makes me uninterested. I tend to segregate my friends into several categories and I am not always consciously aware of those categories. Personas might work for me but then I would have to become consciously aware of the categories. Some sites want you to use your real name and this precludes personas.
There was a marvelous scene in the movie ‘Westside Story’ where a precocious teenager, from the West side of Manhattan (the poor side) had made friends with a group from the Eastside. He had developed the necessary two ways of talking perhaps unconsciously, but one day found himself in a group which included friends from both sides of Manhattan. Suddenly he realized that he did not how to speak in that situation. What was clear is that the movie directors did not find it necessary to have a narrator explain the problem to the audience; it was clear!
The other day I found a U-Tube video that I liked and thought it would be nice to drop a note to the author, leaving perhaps, a channel by which he could reply. I don’t want to supply my life history, I just want to say thanks and that I found his information useful. We could strike up a conversation which might lead to further revelations, should there arise a need.
