Microcosm
by Carl Zimmer
I am 22 pages into Microcosm which is at once:
- to provide a high level view of all we know about E. coli,
- to survey fundamental biology to which the study of E-coli has enormously contributed.
What we know about E. coli is a substantial part of the biology that we know since E. coli has been the most convenient organism to study.
This is obviously a self-reinforcing arrangement.

Tatum showed that some E. coli inherited from more than one E. coli.
On page 22, under sources of energy, he says that the cells assemble batteries from chemicals.
Batteries store energy—they do not create it!
