We will suppose that card decks are identified by an initial card. Alternatively there might be a dedicated console where the user of the card reader identified the deck that he was entering. Those programs that had the right to receive card decks would have a gate to a reader queue server. This program could compare the deck identification with data provided by the caller to determine whether the caller should receive the contents of the deck.

It might be necessary to allow for access to arbitrarily formatted disk packs. This will not be provided initially. If our disk controller provides the read multiple count key data it would seem feasible to construct capabilities to an entire disk pack that would enable the holder to issue read track and write track commands to that pack. These commands transfer the entire track information including the format information.

This mechanism hasn't been fully designed yet, but it can be done pretty much analogously to the other direction, except that on Gnosis the operator writes onto pages in the range and then must wait for two checkpoints to ensure the pages are written into their home position. {Being an operator, he may be able to encourage checkpoints to take place.}
